There are many reasons why Amazon sellers use FBA. For example, Amazon FBA sellers report a 20%-25% sales jump compared to sellers that don’t use the FBA program.

When using FBA, there are many requirements that sellers must fulfill. One of the most important ones is using shipping labels that are compliant with Amazon’s FBA program.

Amazon takes shipping seriously, since they have a 22% share in the parcel delivery market. Since they’re competing with major players like UPS and regional delivery services, Amazon requires its sellers to have an efficient shipping and delivery process.

In this guide, we will discuss Amazon FBA shipping labels, the requirements, and how to create shipping labels for Amazon FBA.

An Overview of Amazon FBA Shipping Labels

A shipping label is a recognizable part of the package with the sender’s and recipient’s addresses. But take one look at the label, and you’ll see different barcodes and a myriad of numbers and letters.

All Amazon parcels have a unique shipping label which helps Amazon keep up with its inventory.

Amazon shipping labels are also important for the fulfillment process, which is why there are many FBA labeling requirements. The information on the labels will help fulfillment workers store, collect, distribute, and ship your products.

These labels include information, such as barcodes and symbols, that will tell warehouses where the label has been and where it’s going.

What’s on Amazon FBA Shipping Labels?

Amazon shipping labels comprise information, specifically barcodes and letters. While some of this information is clear, such as the sender’s and recipient’s addresses, you will also find different codes and acronyms that don’t make sense.

Here are the different shipping label specifications and barcodes and what they all mean for Amazon label requirements.

Specifications for Amazon FBA Shipping Labels

In addition to the product, sender, and recipient information, an Amazon FBA shipping label has a lot of additional data. This ensures the warehouse and other third-party companies can ship the correct product to the right consumer.

The Amazon FBA shipping label specifications include:

  • Ship from. Seller’s name and address.
  • Ship to. Customer’s name and address.
  • FNSKU barcode. We will discuss this in a separate section.
  • Product name.
  • Product conditions. Such as fragile, bulky, perishable, etc.
  • Seller use only. Data specific to sellers.
  • Internal use only. Data used by sellers or third parties handling the parcel. This data can include unit quantities and mixed SKU statements.
  • Prep required. Any preparation that the warehouse staff must do before shipping the item, such as gift wrapping.
  • FBA shipment identifier. A unique barcode that distinguishes parcels.
  • Item type. Should state if the item is “media” or “non-media.”

FNSKU Barcode

The FNSKU (Fulfillment Network Stock Keeping Unit) barcode is printed on Amazon FBA shipping labels and is unique to Amazon. The Amazon FNSKU number is used to track items but also has other uses.

This barcode is important for numerous reasons. Since every item has a unique FNSKU, it helps separate similar items that different sellers may sell. It also tells a seller whether or not an item is ready for shipment.

Amazon will also use these barcodes to uncover unique requirements, such as a GTIN exemption. The FNSKU barcode is on a shipping label for Amazon for an expedited fulfillment process and fewer delivery errors.

What Do They Mean?

As stated in the previous section, the data on Amazon FBA shipping labels will offer product information and requirements. This data is also important for the warehousing and fulfillment process.

Amazon products may make different stops before reaching the customer. Since sellers use FBA to store their products, the warehouse staff must separate different stores and their items. An FNSKU barcode will ensure your items are not mixed up with another.

There’s also a chance that the parcel will end up in the hands of third parties before reaching the customer.

For example, your regional warehouse will see Amazon GS1 barcodes if you're shipping internationally. This means the parcel must undergo the customs process and send the item to another fulfillment center in the other country.

Each warehouse has a unique code, so different warehouses can scan the barcode and know where the item has been.

The different barcodes and symbols will tell the different fulfillment centers where the item has been and where it needs to go next. Plus, this process will update the tracking, offering more transparency to the customer.

Requirements for Amazon FBA Shipping Labels

As you can see, Amazon is very strict about its FBA labels. Here’s a cheat sheet of the Amazon FBA label requirements.

  • Size. Standard labels are 3 ⅓ x 4 in. (8.4 x 10.2 cm) or 4 x 6 in. (10.2 x 15.2 cm) if you use a thermal printer.
  • Location. You must attach the label flat on the parcel, away from the box seams. The label must also be visible and not covered by anything.
  • Carrier data. If you use another carrier, such as USPS, attach their label in addition to Amazon’s.
  • Pallet labels. A label that includes quantities, dates, and locations. Place it on the top middle of the box. If you receive more than one, place each on different sides of the box.
  • Printing. Print each label on white, non-reflexive paper using black ink. You can use laser or thermal printers.

How to Create Amazon FBA Shipping Labels

You have a few options when creating your Amazon FBA label. While you can use Amazon’s services, you also have third-party and DIY options.

FBA Label Service

For most FBA sellers, Amazon will print the label out for you with their FBA label services. When you receive an order, Amazon will notify the warehouse. The warehouse employees will package the parcel and attach the Amazon FBA shipping labels.

Remember that this service will cost you 55 cents per label.

Amazon Partnered Carrier

If you use a separate carrier or logistics partners that work with Amazon, you must use the other carriers’ required shipping label requirements. These carriers can vary between FedEx, UPS, DHL, and others. It’s best to refer to these carriers’ requirements before using this program.

DIY

If you don’t use the FBA Label Service or have an Amazon Partnered Carrier, you can print your own shipping labels. While you need the correct printer type and paper, you can easily print your labels from your Amazon Seller Central account.

Here are the steps to printing your Amazon FBA shipping labels:

1. Open the Inventory tab on your Seller Central Account

2. Go to Manage FBA Inventory and locate your shipment queue

3. Select the products or shipments you need a label for

4. Click Edit and then Print Item Labels

5. Submit box dimension details (like quantity and size)

6. Include any other details you need to create the label

7. Select Confirm and Print Labels. Amazon will also provide a shipping label copy for your records.

Create Your Amazon FBA Shipping Labels

There are many requirements when printing and attaching Amazon FBA shipping labels. The label must be printed on specific paper and using a certain printer type. There are even places where the label must go. In addition, the label needs a unique barcode and information that ensures the parcel goes to the correct customer.

While sellers can print their own labels, you can also use the FBA Label Service and not worry about printing yourself. Understand that if you ship with an Amazon Partnered Carrier, you must abide by their labeling requirements.
